The Pediatric Ophthalmology Unit provides outpatient care for child patients and performs ophthalmologic ambulatory surgery procedures. We treat patients who come referred from health care center physicians, private sector ophthalmologists, or ophthalmology clinics at other hospitals, or as consultations from other HUS departments. Our clinic is responsible for treatment of all ophthalmological illnesses in patients aged from 0 to 16 years. Examples of treated conditions include developmental eye disorders, glaucoma, cataract, eye infections, oncological and mole problems, issues concerning the tear ducts and retina, eye injuries, and difficult cases of amblyopia and strabismus.
Patients are admitted to treatment also from outside the HUS area, and we carry the special responsibility in Finland for treatment of children’s retinoblastoma Due to the broad field of children's eye diseases, we work in close collaboration with other units in the Department of Ophthalmology and with pediatrics. Children's ophthalmologists also perform eye examinations for premature babies, and coordinate the ophthalmologic examinations and treatment for patients in pediatric care.
Ophthalmologic diseases in children are often long-standing and require persistent, expert care and great collaboration with the child’s family.
