Neurocenter comprises the neurology and neurosurgery specialties. Together these specialties are responsible for the diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation of central nervous system diseases in the Helsinki University Hospital area. The center also holds national responsibilities and responsibilities related to its specific catchment area. Neurocenter treats patients continuously from the initial emergency evaluation of an acute symptom through procedures and inpatient treatment and rehabilitation to discharge home. Neurocenter performs internationally top-level clinical research forming a strong international brand in Helsinki University Hospital.
Neurocenter operates in five hospital areas which all have a neurology or neurosurgery outpatient clinic and/or one or several inpatient wards. Surgery, emergency, and intensive care operations are mainly centralized to Meilahti and Töölö hospitals. The total number of Neurocenter employees is 670 of which 127 are doctors and 442 are nursing staff. Neurocenter receives nearly 15,000 referrals yearly. The center treats around 9,500 emergency care patients and performs around 3,500 surgeries annually. Neurocenter is a top-class unit utilizing the latest digital technology. In 2016, the center produced 148 scientific publications, and, in addition to government funded research projects, the Neurocenter has significant competitive funding from external financiers (Academy of Finland, Michael J. Fox Foundation, European Research Council, Business Finland etc.).
