Each year, HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center treats 21 000 patients, 8 000 of whom are new patients. The Cancer Center is the largest cancer treatment center in Finland, and offers top-class treatment and research.

The patient can, together with the referring doctor, choose Cancer Center as their treatment location for specialist medical care.


Outpatient Clinic
  • 28,000 cancer therapy treatments per year
  • 62 beds/treatment chairs


Radiotherapy

  • 10 linear accelerators
  • 2 CT simulators and 1 MRI simulator for planning the treatment
  • 4,300 patients per year, over 300 patients per day
  • 68,000 radiotherapy treatments per year
  • Specialist technology: IMRT, stereotactic, HDR
  • Radioisotope unit for specialized treatment (e.g. SIRT, lutetium)


Hematology

  • Outpatient diagnostics and care
  • Treatment of acute and severe haematological diseases at the inpatient ward
  • National special responsibility for bone marrow transplantations (allogeneic stem cell transplantation)
  • Coagulation Disorder Unit for the benefit of patients with occlusion and bleeds


Breast surgery

  • The largest unit in the Nordic Countries
  • Over 1,600 breast surgeries per year
  • Approximately 90% of breast cancer patients are alive five years after diagnosis


Clinical Trial Unit

  • The largest cancer research unit in Finland
  • Open studies can be viewed on the web site
  • Part of the Nordic NECT network
  • 60 patient recruiting studies open on average
  • Early Phase Trial Unit, to investigate novel medicinal compounds that are early in their development process and have been administered to only few individuals, or are being administered to humans for the first time.


Palliative and psychosocial unit

  • HUS palliative care center
  • Doctors, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, a priest and diet therapy workers, specialized in palliative care


Geriatric-Oncological Unit

  • Finland's only outpatient clinic specializing in the treatment of cancer in elderly people.
  • Personalized treatment plans take the greater need for support into account
