Surgery is one of the major fields of medicine. It is divided into the following specialities:
In addition, surgical procedures are performed in the treatment of ear, nose, and throat diseases, eye diseases, gynecological diseases, and labour.
Surgery in the HUS area
In the HUS area, surgical procedures are performed in most hospitals in the hospital district. Hospitals in the HUCH hospital area in Helsinki, Espoo (Jorvi Hospital), and Vantaa (Peijas Hospital) are primarily in charge of the treatment of the patients in their own area, but they also manage special-level, demanding surgery in the HUCH specialist medical care area (HUS area, Kymenlaakso, and Etelä-Karjala hospital districts) and certain national obligations, such as transplantations, arrhythmia surgery, treatment of severe burns, and treatment of cleft lips and palates.
Along with the development of medical technology, surgical treatment has developed immensely over the last few years. In many surgical specialities, endoscopic surgery that is assisted with a video has replaced some so-called open operations. The latest application of endoscopic surgery is robotically-assisted surgery, which is utilised in urology, cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and gynecological procedures. Implementation of new surgical treatment forms requires systematic research.
