Emergency care for children and adolescents

HUS hospitals run emergency clinics providing specialist medical care to children and adolescents as well as emergency health centers.

Emergency clinics providing specialist medical care

The Children’s Hospital and Jorvi, Hyvinkää, Länsi-Uusimaa and Porvoo Hospitals run emergency clinics providing specialist medical care. As a rule, patients need a referral for these emergency services.
In emergencies (severe shortness of breath, profuse bleeding from a large cut, or a seizure), call the emergency number 112. Paramedics will assess the care need and take the patient to the appropriate care facility.

Emergency health centers

During office hours, the primary care facility for a child or an adolescent with an acute illness is the local health center. Outside office hours, emergency care is available without a referral in the emergency health centers at the hospitals. The Children’s Hospital and Jorvi and Porvoo Hospitals offer emergency helath center services to children and adolescents outside office hours. At Peijas and Hyvinkää Hospitals, emergency health center services are available around the clock.
Patients arriving without a referral will be assessed for care needs by a triage nurse, who will instruct the patient to see a GP (at the local health center during office hours, or an emergency health center outside office hours) or a nurse, or to attend an emergency clinic providing specialist medical care. Patients not requiring emergency care are instructed to visit their local health center.

When to contact emergency service

Emergency services are intended for patients who cannot wait until the next day or over the weekend to get treatment. If a baby aged 3 months and under has a fever, it is always advisable to contact emergency service. However, a child suffering from earache does not need constitute an emergency at night; it is better to give the child pain medication and contact the local health centre in the morning.

Telephone Health Service 09 87 10023

Residents in the HUCH area (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kerava and Kirkkonummi) can contact the Telephone Health Service at 09 87 10023 if they need information on health care services or care instructions. The service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If necessary, the call will be forwarded to the pediatric emergency clinics of the Children’s Hospital or Jorvi Hospital.

Waiting periods

During peak hours, visitors may have to wait a long time for emergency service. Patients are treated according to the urgency of care need, not on a first-come first-served basis. Any examinations or tests, such as blood samples, also take time to be completed and processed. In many cases, it is also important to monitor the child's condition before a decision is made on further care or procedures required.
