The physical therapy unit serves the gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatric wards and outpatient clinics of Kätilöopisto Maternity Hospital. The need for physical therapy is assessed by a doctor.

Our goal is to provide evidence-based physical therapy services that are consistent with good rehabilitation practices, building on what we have learned from both professional experience and effectiveness studies. At the same time, we recognize that every rehabilitee has unique needs.
Physical therapy should be flexible, appropriately timed, and patient-centered.

In the wards, physical therapists work with pregnant women and women recuperating from childbirth or surgery. They can help with mobility-related and functional problems or preventing pelvic floor dysfunction. Physical therapists help evaluate motor and developmental abnormalities in newborns, and they can advise parents as needed about how to support a child’s progress. In the pediatric ward or outpatient clinic, physical therapists participate in assessing the motor development of pre-term and full-term infants, and they provide guidance to parents for supporting motor development.

The physical therapy outpatient clinic treats women who have various kinds of pelvic floor dysfunction, incontinence, mild prolapse, or intercourse pain. Referrals may be sent from Kätilöopisto Maternity Hospital outpatient clinics. For example, women who are pregnant or have recently given birth may need physical therapy due to musculoskeletal problems. The physical therapy outpatient clinic also monitors newborns and pre-term infants in the early postnatal period and provides guidance for parents.
