A major part of HUS hospitals are also part of Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH), which trains the majority of doctors graduating in Finland. Thousands of other health professionals also practise and study each year in HUS hospitals.
HUS has defined the task of its own research activity as being the promotion of critical thinking and support of the development of new treatment methods, the adoption of best care practices, and innovative product development.
The tasks of the University Hospital include medical and other health science research. An example of this is the BioMag laboratory, which is engaged in intensive research work to develop, inter alia, functional imaging methods for the brain and the heart in collaboration with research teams from the University of Helsinki and the University of Technology. Some 1,500 scientific research are constantly in progress at HUCH hospitals.
The medical research and teaching centre Biomedicum Helsinki, whose largest owners are HUS and the University of Helsinki, is located in the grounds of Meilahti Hospital. The University teaching in basic and specialized medicine and international research teams pool their resources at Biomedicum.
There is brisk interaction and co-operation with other international research centres and university hospitals in research work in particular.
