Referrals and appointments: Tel. (09) 471 71445 (Mon. - Fri., 12 p.m.-3 p.m.) Visits to the Neurology Out-Patient Polyclinic (OPC) are by appointment and by physician referral. At the Neurology OPC, there are also specialised polyclinics for patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), movement disorders, memory disorders and muscular diseases. A total of about 50 patients visit the Neurology OPC daily; approximately 11,000 appointments are made annually. The Neurological OPC is responsible for all out-patient care of neurology patients aged below 65 years and are resident in Helsinki. Neurological diseases include diseases of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), peripheral nervous system and muscles. At the Neurology OPC, patients are examined for neurological diseases. The Neurology OPC mainly functions as a diagnostic centre, and does not arrange long term monitoring of neurological diseases, other than in exceptional cases. Patients suffering from movement disorders, Parkinson's disease, dementia or memory disorders, inflammatory central nervous system diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral ischaemia or neurological sleep disorders are treated at the Neurology OPC. The Neurology OPC staff includes the Chief Neurologist, an assistant professor, 4 neurologists, 3 neurology residents, a matron, 6 nurses, a social worker, a 4 ward secretaries and an office secretary. |
